LAA Asserts that #BlackLivesMatter and Calls on Libyans and Libyan Americans to Join Fight Against Racism

As Libyans and as Americans, all of us here at the Libyan American Alliance are saddened and outraged by the recent murder of George Floyd, a black man, by Minneapolis police officers. Since his death, protests have erupted in hundreds of US cities and across the world, expressing deep pain and righteous anger about this and hundreds of other instances of the devaluation of black life at the hands of US law enforcement. This violence is the result of centuries of systemic racism with roots in networks of colonialism and slavery that each of our homes — Libya and the United States — has been complicit in in their own way.

Today and every day, in Libya and in the United States, the Libyan American Alliance steadfastly affirms that Black Lives Matter. But we also know that this statement is meaningless without action, so to our communities, we offer the following suggestions.

To Libyans in the United States: LAA encourages you to join efforts in your community against racism, racist policing, and police brutality. These efforts may include protests, supply donations to protesters, donations to mutual aid initiatives in black communities, and donations to bail funds (link in comments) and policing reform or abolition organizations in your area. We also encourage all Libyans in the United States, especially non-black Libyans, to educate yourselves on the history of racism in the United States and its current manifestations. We have included some resources below (for readers and non-readers) as a starting point.

لليبيين في الولايات المتحدة: يشجعكم التحالف الليبي الأمريكي على الانضمام إلى الجهود المبذولة في مجتمعكم ضد العنصرية والشرطة العنصرية ووحشية الشرطة. قد تشمل هذه الجهود حضور المظاهرات، وتوفير التبرعات للمتظاهرين ، والتبرع لمبادرات المساعدة المتبادلة في المجتمعات السمراء، والتبرعات لصناديق كفالة سجناء المظاهرات ومنظمات إصلاح أو إلغاء الشرطة في منطقتك. كما

And to Libyans all over the world: Although not often discussed outside of black Libyan communities, anti-black racism — against both native black Libyans and black migrants — remains a significant issue in our communities. We encourage you to educate yourself on Libya’s history with the slave trade, on Gaddafi-era and post-2011 discrimination against Libya’s black ethnic groups (namely the Tebu and Tuareg), and on human trafficking and the struggles that black migrants face in Libya today. Again, we have included resources for this below, although they are significantly more difficult to find. We also suggest that all Libyans consider how you might fight anti-blackness in your community, including refraining from using words like “3abeed” or the n-word, educating your family and friends on the forms of racism in Libya, and more just and compassionate treatment of migrants.
